About this work
A woman is painted nude from the back, torso twisted so her face appears in profile while one arm reaches up along a mottled green wall behind her. She rests low, hip and thigh wrapped in a loose garland of impasto flowers and foliage, with a bare foot extending into shadow at the lower edge of the canvas.
Warm, smoothly blended flesh tones stand out against a near-black background and a palette-knife wall of olive, teal and violet. Thick ridges of paint build the floral drapery at her hip, while the body itself stays softly modeled, giving the composition a hushed, contemplative intimacy.
