About this work
A slow woodland stream curves through a thicket of low branches and reeds, its near-black surface reflecting the overhanging foliage. Tangled grasses and twigs crowd the foreground, flecked with pale white marks, while a bare birch trunk rises vertically along the right edge, anchoring the composition against the receding banks of dark greenery.
The palette moves between deep bottle-green, umber and near-black water, set off by chalky white highlights scattered like frost or scattered light across the surface.
