About this work
Domed churches and monastery buildings, one topped with a golden cupola and another with a tall bell tower, stand along a river embankment. A low bridge crosses at left, and the foreground is a wide expanse of slushy, snow-covered ice with a single dark figure walking across it toward the buildings.
Muted greys, ochre and touches of gold describe the architecture beneath a heavy, overcast sky, the paint built up in broken, textural strokes typical of a mixed oil-and-pastel technique. Soft edges and a subdued, wintry palette give the monastery a quiet, contemplative stillness despite the slush underfoot.
