About this work
A ridge of dense dark green fir and mixed forest fills the foreground, its silhouette climbing diagonally across the small panel. Beyond it, pale blue mountain ranges recede in soft layers, and in the gap between the near slope and the hills a scatter of small rooftops marks a distant village, with warm gold-tinged clouds along the upper sky.
Executed on a small scale with a loaded brush, the foliage is built from short, dark strokes of green, black-green and ochre, while the mountains are laid in with broader, softer blue-grey passages. The contrast between the near, textured trees and the smooth distant haze creates depth, and the warm sky light lends the sketch a quiet, dusky mood.
