About this work
A dense crowd of costumed, masked figures gathers on a dark, reflective ground, their raised arms and cloaks silhouetted against a backdrop hung with striped curtains and floating carnival masks. The composition reads as a nighttime festival, with the figures' forms blurring into one another along a horizontal band across the canvas, their images doubled in the glistening surface below.
Layers of pastel and oil are scraped and dragged over the canvas, mixing acid greens, pinks, and golds with deep blacks to build a shimmering, unstable surface. Loose, agitated marks and dripping strokes give the crowd a spectral, restless quality, turning the festive subject into something closer to an uneasy, dreamlike vision.
