About this work
A narrow passage runs between tall, shadowed buildings toward a lit archway at the far end. A street lamp mounted on the right-hand wall throws a bright halo into the dark blue sky, while a second, dimmer light glows deeper in the lane. The foreground pavement stretches diagonally toward the viewer, its surface broken by patches of color.
Built up in layered pastel, the scene is dominated by near-black blues and browns for the buildings, punctuated by the lamp's warm white glare and scattered strokes of orange, teal and violet across the ground. Rough, energetic scribbles of pastel stand in for foliage and stonework rather than describing it in detail. The heavy shadow and isolated pools of light give the lane a hushed, slightly eerie evening mood.
