About this work
Leafless tree trunks and a tangle of thin branches rise across the foreground against an open sky, framing a distant view down into a wooded valley. Patches of snow linger among rocks and fallen branches at the bottom of the canvas, while the slope beyond shows rust, pink, and ochre undergrowth breaking through the thinning cover.
The sky is built from soft washes of blue and lavender-grey, while the branches are drawn in quick, dark, calligraphic strokes that stand out crisply against the lighter ground.
