About this work
A jumble of pitched rooftops, chimneys, and TV antenna masts fills the composition beneath a wide expanse of night sky, with a slender crescent moon rising at upper left. Scattered windows across the buildings glow yellow and a single red light stands out among them, while a ladder leans against one gable and a small bird sits on a wire.
Rendered almost entirely in deep blues and blue-greys, the rooftops are simplified into flat, angular shapes that read as silhouettes against the luminous evening sky. The warm pinpricks of window light and the pale moon provide the only relief from the cool palette. The effect is quiet and still, an ordinary skyline made calm and mysterious by darkness.
