About this work

A row of ornate nineteenth-century buildings lines the far bank of a still canal, their windows and facades glowing amber against a deep blue evening sky. A thin contrail crosses above a pale crescent moon, while a single figure in a long coat stands alone at the embankment railing, gazing across the water toward the lit facades.

The composition is built on a strong horizontal symmetry between the buildings and their mirrored reflection, rendered with smooth, precise brushwork and crisp architectural detail. Warm ochre light from the windows plays against the cool saturated blue of the sky and water, creating a still, quiet atmosphere of urban solitude at the edge of night.
