About this work
A face is submerged in still, dark water up to the nose, eyes open and looking directly out, with long hair fanning across the surface around it and a pink flower tucked near one ear. Ripples spread outward from the face, and clusters of pink water lilies with their round leaves crowd the lower edge of the canvas.
Deep blackish greens and browns describe the water's surface, built up with thick, dragged strokes, against which the pale, smoothly modeled face and bright pink lily blossoms stand out sharply. The contrast between the murky depths and the delicate flowers, along with the watchful, half-submerged gaze, creates a mysterious, dreamlike stillness.
