About this work
A solitary pale figure in a white ruffled gown and dark hood sits at the centre, hands drawn together in front of her. To her left, a shadowy brown shape with visible eyes and a mane-like outline reads as an animal head close by. Below, streaks of pink and red gather like scattered petals, and above, a deep violet-blue sky is streaked with white, cloud-like strokes.
The paint is worked thinly in places and thickly in others, letting the ground show through darker passages. Cool blues, violets and blacks dominate, set against the warm cream of the dress and pink accents below. Contours stay soft, faces barely modelled, and the haze of colour gives the picture a hushed, wistful sadness.
