About this work
A man's face fills almost the entire canvas, shown frontally beneath a soft military-style cap marked with a small metal star. His expression is fixed and worn, deep-set eyes looking directly outward, with heavy shadowing carving the cheeks and brow. Long vertical drips of paint run down from the cap and across the face and background.
Rendered almost entirely in grays, blacks and warm off-whites, the portrait relies on scraped, dry brushwork and dripping washes that partly dissolve the features. The dripping paint reads as erosion or fading, giving the tightly cropped head a worn, ghostly quality, half emerging from and half sinking back into the dark ground.
