About this work
Ten near-identical young women, all sharing the same face and wavy brown hair but dressed in different modern tops - yellow, pink, blue, white - are massed together in a pyramidal group. Each presses a hand to her own chest or a neighbour's shoulder; the woman at the centre has her eyes closed while the others look outward, and faint rows of candle flames glow in the pale background.
Skin and hair are painted with smooth academic modeling and warm ochre tones, while the flat, pale ground and repeated features give the picture a still, ritual quality. The multiplied face and synchronized gesture of hand to heart turn an ordinary group of sitters into a quiet, inward-looking rite.
