About this work
A man sits hunched forward, arms crossed over drawn-up knees and forehead resting on them, his back turned three-quarters to the viewer. Above him a golden laurel wreath hangs suspended in the dark air, and higher still a large owl swoops downward with wings fully spread; the ground beneath him is a parched, cracked expanse lit by a thin red glow at the horizon.
The figure's skin is rendered in warm, burnished gold tones that stand out sharply against the near-black sky, which breaks into churning orange and red cloud on the right. Crisp linear detail on the wreath and owl contrasts with the soft, smoky background, lending the scene a brooding, symbolic weight.
