About this work
A dense cluster of dark, loosely painted riders and horses fills the left half of the composition beneath a pale horned skull suspended at the top. Their forms merge into one another in deep shadow, while the right half of the canvas opens into an almost empty pale ground where several soft luminous orbs hang like distant lights or moons.
Warm umber, black and dried-blood red dominate the crowded left side, applied in smeared, gestural strokes that blur individual outlines, while the right side thins to pale, translucent washes. The contrast between the dark huddled mass and the open glowing void gives the painting a slow, meditative rhythm.
