About this work
A young woman stands at the centre of the composition in a stiff, gold-embroidered gown whose hem is patterned with grotesque faces; she covers her eyes with both hands while a white dove perches on her fingers. She is flanked by masquerade masks and disembodied heads of a horse, bull, cat, rooster and goat, with two folk dolls resting among straw wreaths at her feet.
Thick, jewel-toned impasto and gilded highlights carry the palette from deep ultramarine sky to warm ochre and copper in costume and creatures. Dense ornament covers nearly every surface, giving the canvas an encrusted, tapestry-like texture. The crowd of masks and beasts around the blindfolded figure creates a hushed, carnival unease.
