About this work
A woman with hair bound in cloth stands on a black-and-white tiled floor, playing a violin tucked beneath her chin. Her dark red and gold robe, patterned with vertical stripes, falls open to bare her chest and shoulder. Behind her a heavily worked, weathered gold wall carries faint painted inscriptions, a small icon-like inset, and scattered marks, framing her as if inside an old shrine.
Thick, encrusted paint and scraped gold leaf give the background a ruined, archaeological texture, set against the smoother, more naturalistic modeling of the figure's face and body. Deep red, ochre and black dominate, with cool light on the skin creating quiet contrast. The effect is heavy, ritualistic and somewhat melancholic despite the act of music-making.
