About this work
A robed figure in gold, hood drawn over the head, stands among carved stone columns and arches, holding a set of scales in one hand with a large ornamental key hanging at the waist. Beyond the arcade a domed church, a banner reading "Liberty", a perched peacock, a small statue and an angel leading a child appear across a checkered courtyard, with a cut pomegranate resting in the foreground.
A flat expanse of gold leaf stands in for sky, set against realistically rendered stone and cloth, giving the scene an emblem-like, otherworldly stillness. The dense mix of unrelated symbolic objects and quiet, downcast figure produces a mysterious, dreamlike allegory rather than an ordinary street scene.
