About this work
A pale, mask-like face in profile occupies the left side of the canvas, its features flattened and stylized, with a blue arc over the eye and the mouth touched red. Beside it, a second, dimmer head emerges from the gloom in ochre and rust tones that barely separate from the darkness. A curved dark shape, like a scarf or strap, trails from the mouth into the lower composition.
The palette stays in a narrow range of near-black greens, browns, and muted golds, with the mask's face left the lightest passage. Paint is applied thickly and dragged in broad, agitated strokes, giving the surface a rough, unsettled texture. The effect is dreamlike and disquieting, the mask hovering between portrait and disguise.
