About this work
An older man is shown from the shoulders up, turned in three-quarter view with his gaze cast to the side. Deep creases mark his forehead and cheeks, a thin drooping mustache frames his mouth, and his bare shoulder and neck are visible below an open collar of loose hair.
Warm sepia washes model the flesh tones while dark charcoal accents define the eyes, hair, and shadowed side of the face, left against a bare, lightly toned paper ground. Loose cross-hatching and soft rubbed tone build the volume of the head, and the combination of warm and cool grays gives the study a quiet, searching intensity.
