About this work
The drawing isolates a young woman's head, neck and upper shoulders against a bare pale ground. Her dark hair is combed loosely to one side with strands falling over the forehead, and her eyes look straight out at the viewer with a calm, steady expression while the mouth stays closed.
Worked entirely in a single warm reddish-brown pigment on paper, the drawing builds form through layered hatching and soft blended shadow along the cheek, jaw and neck. The limited monochrome palette and careful modeling against an untouched ground produce a quiet, focused, academic study.
