About this work
A young woman is shown in strict profile, her eyes closed and head tilted slightly down, hair drawn back smoothly from her face. Only her head, neck and the edge of a patterned red, teal and black collar are included, set against a loosely hatched grey ground.
The skin is built from warm ochre and rose pastel blended smooth over the cheeks and jaw, while the hair and background are left in looser, visible strokes. Cool grey hatching frames the warm flesh tones, and the closed eyes and quiet pose give the study a calm, contemplative feel typical of an academic head study.
