About this work
A young woman's head is turned slightly to one side and tilted down, her eyes lowered in a quiet, downcast gaze. Only the head and the top of the shoulders are worked up in color; the rest of the sheet remains bare toned paper, with a faint rectangular framing line and a few loose pencil marks visible around the figure.
Warm ochre and rust pastel tones build the flesh against the raw sienna paper, with soft blending on the lit half of the face and looser, sketchier strokes on the shadowed side and hair. The unfinished handling and visible construction marks give the study an exploratory, academic quality.
