About this work
A close view of a child's face beneath a tall, pointed harlequin cap patterned in blue, red and cream triangles with white dots. The gaze is lowered and pensive; below the head, only a graphite under-drawing indicates the shoulders and a ruffled collar still to be painted.
The ground is a mottled grey-lavender with warm ochre patches showing through unpainted passages, against which the face is modeled smoothly in soft flesh tones. The unfinished lower portion, left as bare pencil line, gives the study an exploratory, quietly sober character.
