About this work
A young man's face, tilted back with eyes lifted toward the upper corner and lips slightly parted, is set against a striped, target-like circle rendered in black and white. Thick dark bars cross the composition horizontally and vertically like a beam, cutting through both the figure and the circular pattern behind him.
The image is worked in muted browns, greys and chalky whites, with drips and splashes of paint running down the surface and pooling near the bottom. The interplay of the softly modeled face with the hard-edged geometric pattern and dripping paint creates a dreamlike, suspended atmosphere.
