About this work
Three roughly modeled figures stand close together against a pale, mottled backdrop, their forms built up in thick, cracked ridges of paint rather than smooth contour. The central figure tilts its head back with mouth open, as though calling out or gazing upward, while the flanking figures stand with faces angled down or aside, one resting a raised hand near the center figure's shoulder.
The palette is confined to blackened teal, ochre and bone white, with the surface built up in heavy encrusted layers that crack and pool like eroded stone or old plaster. Light is diffuse, catching the raised ridges of paint and leaving the recesses in shadow. The rough, sculptural handling gives the group a weathered, totemic presence, tense and enigmatic rather than descriptive.
