About this work
A dense crowd of pale, hooded figures fills the foreground beneath a towering crenellated red wall and tiered tower resembling the Kremlin. Above the crowd rise numerous dark-red banners, several trailing black ribbons as if in mourning, angled and wind-blown against the wall. A row of small onlookers stands on a distant platform, watching the gathering below.
The wall is rendered in scumbled, mottled magenta and white, giving a rough, plastered texture, while the crowd is reduced to simplified pale silhouettes with only hints of facial features. The dominant maroon-and-cold-blue palette and flattened, stylized forms create a somber, funereal atmosphere heavy with collective grief.
