About this work
A calm river channel runs straight into the distance, framed almost symmetrically by dense stands of bare, frost-toned trees on both banks that meet at a soft vanishing point. The lower half of the canvas is given over to the water's surface, which lies perfectly still and doubles the trees and pale sky above it in a long, unbroken reflection.
The palette is kept narrow and tonal, moving between soft greys, warm taupe, and pale cream, with only faint touches of ochre in the undergrowth. Dry, feathery brushwork describes the tangled branches while the water is painted in smoother, glassy strokes, lending the whole scene a hushed, meditative calm.
