About this work

An old wire-framed hurricane lamp, its wick raised and handle looped at top, stands centered against a plain dark ground. Its glass globe is rendered pale grey and white at the shoulder, shading into rust-orange toward the base, with the metal frame and carrying handle picked out in the same warm rust tones.

The palette moves from near-black through burnt orange, rust and dull grey, with thick, textured strokes describing worn metal and cracked glass. Strong directional light falls across the object, casting deep shadow into the surrounding darkness and giving the humble lamp a warm, dramatic presence.
