About this work

A two-panel composition repeats the same motif: a pair of large adult hands cupped together, cradling a small articulated wooden mannequin figure curled at their center as if sleeping. The left panel sets the hands against near-black shadow; the right panel places a similar pairing against a lighter, warm grey ground with visible canvas texture.

Rendered almost entirely in sepia, umber and grey, the work relies on dramatic chiaroscuro - hands and figure emerge from deep shadow through built-up, dry brushwork and visible cross-hatching, while the surroundings dissolve into darkness. The tight framing and warm-toned light concentrate attention on the gesture of holding, producing a tender, protective mood.
