About this work
A slender calf rests on bare ground with its legs tucked beneath it, sheltering under the bare, twisting branches of a dead tree. Rugged cliff faces rise behind, and a small bunch of grapes hangs from an unseen vine in the upper right corner of the sheet.
Fine parallel hatching and stippled crayon render the weathered bark, striated rock, and the calf's smooth coat in contrasting textures. The composition's empty stillness and soft grey tonal range give the scene a quiet, pastoral hush.
