About this work
An aged, bearded face fills the frame at close range, eyes open wide and brow deeply lined, while two large hands press against the temples and forehead as if shielding or steadying the head; the nose and cheekbones are exaggerated, giving the features a distorted, almost sculptural weight.
Dense networks of fine hatched pencil lines build up tone and volume, from the crisp white of the paper to deep charcoal shadows in the beard and hair; the meticulous cross-hatching gives the drawing a nervous, intense energy.
