About this work
Several tightly interlaced figures recline and cling to one another around a wooden ladder-like frame: a standing woman, a man leaning back with closed eyes, a child cradled against him, and a lower figure holding an open book. Bare feet project into the foreground, and a scatter of pears lies in the deep cast shadow at right.
The drawing is built entirely from graphite cross-hatching, with stylized, faceted faces and elongated limbs. Strong directional light carves deep black shadow against bare white paper, and the tightly locked bodies, despite their calm expressions, create a dense, brooding tension.
