About this work
Large rounded boulders break the surface of a shallow gulf at low tide, their dark forms echoed in the still water below. A solitary figure and a small dog wade through the middle of the bay toward a low, tree-lined spit on the horizon, while two birds cross the pale sky above.
Soft washes of watercolor and tempera build a pearly palette of dawn pink, pale blue, and warm ochre in the stones, the sky bleeding gently into the sea. Loose, wet-on-wet brushwork and a wide horizontal format give the scene a hushed, contemplative stillness broken only by faint ripples around the rocks.
