About this work

A woman in a blue apron and white blouse stands at the far right of a heavy cast-iron printing press, her hand resting on a sheet of paper laid across the press bed. The press's large spoked flywheel and gears dominate the foreground, rendered as dark, looming machinery against a cooler, hazier background of shelving and equipment.

Painted in deep blue-greys and blacks with warm reddish undertones in the floor and shadows, the canvas uses broad, textured strokes for the machine and softer modeling for the figure's face and hands. The interplay of shadow and the massive silhouette of the wheel lends the scene a quiet, industrious, shadowed mood.
