About this work
A young woman in an elaborate costume of colored diamond patches, gold ornament, and a powdered wig stands centrally, raising a mask made of flowers on a long stick in one hand and holding up a small birdcage-shaped lantern in the other. Her wide, bell-shaped skirt doubles as a painted scene of garden colonnades, rose trees, and two miniature horsemen in harlequin dress.
Set against a pale, star-flecked grey ground crossed by faint radiating lines, the costume is built from flat blocks of crimson, green, gold, and black enriched with fine gilded detailing and jewel-like dots. Combining a delicately painted face with densely ornamented, mosaic-like drapery, the picture reads as theatrical and dreamlike, part portrait, part fairy-tale pageant.
