About this work
A row of ochre, pink and rust-colored apartment buildings with chimneys and dormers lines the far bank of a river, linked to the viewer's side by a low arched stone bridge with iron railings. In the foreground the river's surface churns in choppy waves, while a heavy overcast sky fills the upper half of the canvas.
The scene is built from thick, visible dabs of impasto in warm ochre, terracotta and rose set against cool grey-blue water and sky. Loose, vibrating impressionist brushwork keeps edges soft, giving the damp early-spring air a restless, lively energy despite the muted, overcast light.
