Flowers

Four square compositions are arranged in a grid, each a small still life of flowers in a vase or jar: dried seed pods and curling leaves at upper left, a cluster of sunflowers turning toward the light at upper right, drooping yellow blossoms over a glass jar at lower left, and a bunch of white daisies with yellow centers at lower right.

Each panel is built from dense, directional pencil hatching that turns the ground almost black, with the flowers picked out in ochre yellow and white touches of color. The heavy shading and closely worked lines give the flowers a slightly wilted, somber presence despite the pops of yellow, producing a melancholic, quietly decorative effect across the four studies.
