About this work
A large, cloud-like mass of white and cream paint arcs diagonally across the upper half of the canvas, crossed by a band of red and scattered cobalt-blue marks that suggest spread wings or feathers. Below it, darker brown and black patches anchor the composition against a broad field of warm ochre and tan.
Paint is applied thickly and rubbed into the visibly creased, unstretched canvas, leaving raw fibers exposed along the border. The rising diagonal movement, warm ground, and bursts of red and blue give the picture an energetic, soaring quality even though no bird or figure is literally described.
