About this work
The composition is cropped tightly to an elderly man's face and part of his shoulder, seen from a low angle with his head tilted downward. Deep creases mark his forehead and cheek, and a pale streak of grey hair or light falls along the right edge of his face, while his gaze is cast down in silence.
Warm ochre, sienna and umber build the illuminated side of the face while the rest sinks into near-black shadow, creating a stark, single-source light. Thick, gestural brushstrokes and visible palette-knife marks give the skin a rough, weathered texture, producing a heavy, somber mood of age and quiet endurance.
