About this work
A narrow stream curves between a steep red-clay bank on the left and grassy, autumn-gold woodland on the right, with fallen dark branches leaning into the water. A bird flies low just above the surface, wings spread, heading downstream, while tall trees in yellow and rust foliage line the far shore and reflect in the calm water.
Earthy reds, ochres and olive greens dominate, rendered in fine, detailed strokes that pick out individual leaves, grasses and ripples. Soft, diffused daylight and the mirrored reflections give the river bend a quiet, wistful stillness suited to the painting's title.
