About this work
Several bearded men in worn jackets and caps walk together along a harbor edge, hands in pockets or held out, while dozens of seagulls wheel and swoop around them, wings spread and beaks open. Fishing boats are moored in the water behind, their masts and hulls silhouetted against the horizon.
The sky is painted in bands of violet, mauve and burnt orange, the low evening light catching the undersides of the birds' wings in white and grey. Brushwork is loose and energetic, especially in the flurry of overlapping gulls, creating a charged, dynamic atmosphere of motion around the still, watchful figures.
