About this work
A weathered rust-and-ochre boulder sits in the foreground of a pale pebble beach, echoed by a jagged rocky headland that juts into the sea behind it. Smaller stones are scattered across the shore, and a second rocky promontory recedes into the distance under a wide, cloud-filled sky.
Warm rust, ochre and violet-grey tones in the rock stand out against the cool blue-grey of sea and sky. The clouds are laid in with broad, soft strokes, while the rock faces are built up with thicker, more textured paint to suggest their rough surface. The overall effect is heavy and dramatic despite the stillness of the water.
