About this work
A nude young woman stands at the center of a swirling composition, arms lifted above her head and wet hair falling over one shoulder. Billowing white fabric wraps and twists around her body, echoing the crash of foam-topped waves below. A massive dark blue-black serpent with an open, fanged mouth and a glowing eye rises from the water and coils around her legs and the drapery, its scaled body looping through the scene from lower left to upper background.
Rendered in tight, photographic realism, the picture is built from a restricted palette of deep ultramarine, near-black and chalky white, with the woman's warm flesh tone the sole contrasting note. Light falls sharply across her torso and the folds of cloth, giving the fabric a hyper-real sheen against the turbulent, foam-flecked sea and clouded sky, creating a charged, mythic atmosphere of danger held in suspension.
