About this work
The sheet is dominated by an almost solid black field, broken by diagonal streaks of pale, chipped pigment that could read as broken branches, shards or scattered debris rather than any legible scene or figure. No stable horizon or recognizable form holds the eye; the composition works instead through scattered rhythm and density of marks.
The tempera is built up thickly and then scraped or dragged, leaving a grainy, cracked surface texture in near-monochrome black, grey and bone white. The rough handling and absence of a settled subject give the study a brooding, unresolved, exploratory feel.
