About this work
An oval frame is dominated on the left by an enlarged profile face with curling hair. Beside it, a nude figure hangs head-down, limbs splayed, entwined with a second smaller head below, while at right a curly-haired young man stands with his back to the viewer. A small butterfly drifts near the upper edge.
Fine parallel hatching shades the oversized profile into soft relief against the pale paper, while the acrobatic hanging figure is built from looser, curving contour lines. The juxtaposition of a calm, watching face with the tangled, inverted body gives the print a dreamlike, unsettled tension.
