About this work

The nude body of Christ is laid diagonally across the lower half of the canvas, head tipped back on the left and arms folded on the chest. Two mourners bend in from the darkness above: a bearded man at left and, at right, a woman wrapped in a white headscarf and blue-grey mantle, her hand resting gently on the body.

Deep brown and near-black shadow dominates the canvas, against which the pale flesh of the body glows with warm ochre and cream highlights. Rough, scumbled brushwork and visible knife marks give the paint surface a raw, unfinished texture, and the single source of light produces a heavy, grief-laden atmosphere.
