About this work
Painted in nine compartments like an ancient frieze, the upper and lower rows show hybrid creatures with human bodies and the heads of a crocodile, wolf, zebra, lion and bull. In the central panel a pale nude man stands before a jackal-headed figure and a bird-headed judge holding a scroll and scales, while a huge crocodile with bared teeth crouches below, waiting to devour.
The surface glows in deep reds, oranges and blacks, broken by touches of green and blue on the demon figures, giving the panels a hot, infernal light. Forms are painted in rough, heavy strokes with thick outlines, and the repeating grid of monstrous heads creates a mysterious, ritualistic mood far from naturalistic painting.
