About this work
Two young women in pale, flowing gowns stand within a pattern of narrow vertical strips, alternating dense clipped hedge and plain cream pathway. The left figure lowers her eyes, hand raised to her cheek near a rose; the right leans forward, reaching toward flowers and birds below. Pink roses are scattered through the hedge, and songbirds, doves and bee-eaters perch or fly among the leaves.
Foliage is built from dense, small dabs of varied green giving the hedge a tapestry-like texture, while the women's gowns and skin are painted smoothly in soft ivory and rose.
