About this work

A calm river curves through the composition, its glassy surface mirroring a dense band of dark pines along the far bank and pale morning mist drifting above the water. On the left bank sit low wooden houses of a small village, with a couple of moored rowboats at the water's edge; grassy slopes and scattered fir trees rise on the right.

Soft blue-grey and green tones dominate, with the mist softening the tree line into hazy silhouettes reflected in the water below. Thin, blended brushwork builds the smooth surface of the river and diffused morning light, while touches of ochre mark the rooftops, giving the whole view a hushed, tranquil early-morning quiet.
